Saab’s been through a lot this past year – sold off to Koenigsegg, struggled through a poor world economy, and researching new designs. Now all their patience will turn to perseverance as they bring 2010’s Saab 9-5 to the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

[nggallery id=1]

Based on a sportier version of GM’s Epsilon II platform, the new 9-5 rides on a 111.8″ wheelbase, which should offer plenty of room in the passenger compartment. The increase in room also extends to the truck, where cargo capacity measures a healthy 18.11 cubic feet.

Engine options will include a three turbocharged petrol units: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 160hp, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 210hp, and a 2.8-liter V6 with 300hp. Diesel power will be provided by two 2.0-liter units which will produce 160 hp and 190 hp. Eventually a petrol-electric hybrid is expected, as is a biofuel model. Look for the new Saab 9-5 sedan to go on sale in Europe in April 2010, with a base price around €35,000.

It looks like 2010 will be a very good year at Saab – as the new 9-5 sedan has finally been released. Well, at least the official images have been made public. 2010’s Saab 9-5 will be on sale across the pond in Spring of that year, and hopefully on North American soil around the same time. Saab based the vehicle on GM’s Epsilon II platform – and rides on a 111″ wheelbase, which offers plenty of passenger space.

Saab’s 9-5 will include three engine options (in Europe) – a turbocharged a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 160 hp, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 210 hp, and a 2.8-liter V6 with 300 hp. There will also be a diesel motor overseas, they love the D over there. How about a gas-electric hybrid or biofuel model in its future? Possibly – stay tuned.

Inside and out, 2010’s Saab features new, almost BMW/Mercedes inspired designs. The rear slopes down on a more opened angle than previous Saab cars, and the instrument panel lights up and jumps at you like a holographic screen. Harman Kardon audio system, keyless entry, and 8-inch Panasonic navigation system are also standard. Get ready to pay €35,000 UK for the car once it appears on dealer lots – no word yet on USA pricing.

Check out the latest photos of Saab’s 9X Air concept – a convertible coupe with hybrid powertrain and room for two passengers in the back. 9X Air is trying to shoot for a 40-plus miles per gallon fan club – with the help of lithium-ion batteries to power up the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and E85 flex-fuel there should be no trouble achieving this rating. Whether or not this turbo-hybrid powertrain makes it into the 9X has yet to be seen, but with all the pumped-up hybrid competition coming soon (Chevy Volt, Cruze, Honda Insight, to name but a few) Saab will have to turn out all the tricks in order to grab attention at your local dealership.

Back in 2006, Saab toyed with the idea of a futuristic Aero X concept. Since then Saab enthusiasts have been messing around with design and functionality. It’s overall design hearkens back to the auto maker’s aviation roots. From the road to the air strip, Saab tries not to disappoint. Aero’s interior, including dashboard, looks more like a futuristic cockpit or something out of a Stanley Kubrick film.

The two-seat sports coupe has a canape, which slides open like Tim Burton’s Batmobile – it’s twin-turbo, BioPower V6 engine is fueled by bio-ethanol, a sustainable energy source that is easy on the the environment, cutting fossil CO2 emissions. Adding green power to the performance and responsibility that Saab already brings to the automotive industry.

Depth-perception glass dashboards give the appearance of 3D when you look upon its gauges. You may have to stop yourself from driving the vehicle into space. We are not sure if the fighter-jet canape will sell in the open car market, but we hope more production design models make it on the streets in years to come.

Saab launched the 9-7x in 2005 as a way to diversify its model lineup. Based off the SUV platform of other GM models, the 9-7X is powerful and comfortable with little changes for the 2008 model year. The Saab 9-7X differentiates itself from other SUVs in its family through distinctively styled interior and exterior features.

This premium midsize SUV comes in three trim levels: the 4.2i, 5.3 and Aero. The 4.2i has 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a sunroof, leather seating, OnStar communications, satellite radio and MP3-compatible Bose audio. The 5.3i trim adds V8 power, xenon HID headlamps and power-adjustable pedals. The high-performance Aero trim upgrades to 20-inch wheels and Carbon Flash charcoal metallic paint.

Powered by GM engines, all trim levels run on an all-wheel-drive, four-speed automatic transmission. The 4.2i features an inline six-cylinder that produces up to 285 horsepower; while the 5.3i on V8 engine generates 300 horsepower. The 6.0-liter V8 engine of the Aero blows the other trims away when producing its maximum of 390 horsepower.

To set apart from competitors, Saab made a series of changes to suspension and steering to create a different SUV experience. The 9-7X comes with the standard safety features that include antilock disc brakes, OnStar communications and stability control.

Introduced in 1999, the Saab 9-5 series is one of the oldest cars on the market. Saab’s appealing classic style for the 9-5 it what has kept it around for so long. Familiarity and comfort can go a long way in the automobile industry.

After its extensive redesign in 2006, the 9-5 has no major changes for this year. Available as either a sedan or a SportCombi (wagon); all 9-5’s run in front-wheel drive and are powered by a 260-horsepower, turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine.

Two trim levels are available for each type of 9-5: 2.3T or Aero. The 2.3T comes with 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof and a nine-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system. The Aero adds some more features such as a special interior trim and two-tone leather seats. The Visibility Package adds xenon headlights, rear parking assist and auto-dimming outside mirrors.

The dashboard received a more straightforward GM layout, as opposed to its traditional look. Spacious enough to provide comfort for five, this Saab competes with the Acura TL, Lincoln MKZ and the Volvo S60.

The 9-5 has standard safety features this year. This includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control and front-seat side airbags for the head and torso. OnStar communications is also incorporated.
