Word is out that the plans GM had for the next generation of the Saab 9-3 have been scrapped in favor of a smaller version. The new next generation 9-3 will be based on what GM calls its “Global Premium Product”.

This vehicle platform will better meet new and stricter environmental guidelines in the U.S. and Europe, and its smaller size will position it to compete with other recent luxury small cars like the Audi A3.

We’ll post design concepts as soon as we get them.

The Saab 9-3 enters the 2008 model year with modified looks and increased power. Consistent with its modern and refreshing style, the 9-3 is on the high end of attractive entry-luxury cars. Available as a convertible, sedan or SportCombi, this Saab competes with the Audi A4 and Volvo S60.

The 2.0-liter engine is equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, an eight-way power driver seat, leather upholstery and a seven-speaker CD stereo. The Aero model upgrades to a 2.8-liter V6 engine equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, front sport seats, Bose stereo and firmer suspension tuning. Although front-wheel drive is current, all-wheel-drive will be available later in the year for aero sedans and wagons.

The sedan and SportCombi get new doors for 2008. All models get new headlights, fog lights and taillights. A leather interior is optional, to go along with the XM Satellite Radio and OnStar. Seating up to five comfortably, the trunk of the Saab 9-3 can also fit up to 14.8 cubic feet of cargo.

Featuring antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags and stability control, the 9-3 was given four out of five stars for frontal-impact protection by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
