2010 Saab 9-5 is Ready for Frankfurt

Saab’s been through a lot this past year – sold off to Koenigsegg, struggled through a poor world economy, and researching new designs. Now all their patience will turn to perseverance as they bring 2010′s Saab 9-5 to the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Based on a sportier version of GM’s Epsilon II platform, the new 9-5 rides on a 111.8″ wheelbase, which should offer plenty of room in the passenger compartment. The increase in room also extends to the truck, where cargo capacity measures a healthy 18.11 cubic feet.

Engine options will include a three turbocharged petrol units: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 160hp, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 210hp, and a 2.8-liter V6 with 300hp. Diesel power will be provided by two 2.0-liter units which will produce 160 hp and 190 hp. Eventually a petrol-electric hybrid is expected, as is a biofuel model. Look for the new Saab 9-5 sedan to go on sale in Europe in April 2010, with a base price around €35,000.

Koenigsegg Takes Full Ownership of Saab from GM

As one of several car companies General Motors put up for sale earlier this year, Saab was one to sell quickly. And today it is official – GM has announced they have signed a stock purchase agreement with Koenigsegg for 100% of Saab Automobile. GM and Saab will reportedly “continue to share technology, under a variety of license and service agreements, for a defined time period.”

GM’s European President Carl-Peter Forster said, “This contract is an important step in the journey to a potential deal.” He added that, “Saab’s great cars, its unique design, safety- and engine-technology, as well as its excellent brand image, combined with Koenigsegg Group’s unique combination of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, bode well for a successful future for the brand. We will continue to work with all parties to define the final details and ensure a fast closure of the deal, which we expect to take place in the next few months. The closure of the deal is contingent on the funding commitment from the European Investment Bank, guaranteed by the Swedish government.” Well now, doesn’t he seem enthusiastic about all of this!

Both new Saab owner Christian von Koenigsegg and Managing Director of Saab Jan Åke Jonssson (try saying those names 3-times fast) echoed Forster’s sentiments. The all new Saab 2010 9-3X will be the final vehicle released under a GM-Saab partnership, and Koenigsegg hopes the Swedish auto maker will take a new design angle on future concepts, while keeping the beauty and performance of Saab cars alive.

2010 Saab 9-5 Official Release

It looks like 2010 will be a very good year at Saab – as the new 9-5 sedan has finally been released. Well, at least the official images have been made public. 2010′s Saab 9-5 will be on sale across the pond in Spring of that year, and hopefully on North American soil around the same time. Saab based the vehicle on GM’s Epsilon II platform – and rides on a 111″ wheelbase, which offers plenty of passenger space.

Saab’s 9-5 will include three engine options (in Europe) – a turbocharged a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 160 hp, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 210 hp, and a 2.8-liter V6 with 300 hp. There will also be a diesel motor overseas, they love the D over there. How about a gas-electric hybrid or biofuel model in its future? Possibly – stay tuned.

Inside and out, 2010′s Saab features new, almost BMW/Mercedes inspired designs. The rear slopes down on a more opened angle than previous Saab cars, and the instrument panel lights up and jumps at you like a holographic screen. Harman Kardon audio system, keyless entry, and 8-inch Panasonic navigation system are also standard. Get ready to pay €35,000 UK for the car once it appears on dealer lots – no word yet on USA pricing.
